Description

Organized at camp randall, madison, wisconsin and, mustered in july 16, 1861. Left state for washington, d. C., in july 28. The unit would see exclusive service in the eastern theatre. Service: duty in the defences of washington, d.C., till march, 1862. Advance on manassas, virginia., march 10-16., advance to falmouth april 9-19. Operations against jackson june 2-11, reconnaissance to orange court house july 24-27,. Reconnaissance to frederick’s hall station and spotsylvania court house august 5-8., thornburg’s mills (or massaponax church), battle of cedar mountain august 9. Pope’s campaign in northern virginia august 16-september 2. Fords of the rappahannock august 21-23. Action at gainesville august 28, battles of groveton, bull run, chantilly, maryland campaign, battles of south mountain, maryland., september 14, antietam, advance to falmouth, virginia, fredericksburg, mud march, expedition to heathsville february 12-14, chancellorsviile campaign, operations at pollock’s mill creek, fitzhugh’s crossing, chancellorsviile, gettysburg (pa.) campaign, june 11-july 24,.Gettysburg, haymarket, mine run campaign, campaign from the rapidan to the james river may 4-june 15, 1864, wilderness, laurel hill, spotsylvania, spotsylvania court house, bloody angle, north anna river, jericho ford, cold harbor, bethesda church siege of petersburg june 16, 1864, to april 2, 1865, weldon railroad, boydton road, hatcher’s run, dabney’s mills, hatcher’s run, appomattox campaign march 28-april 9,. Lewis farm, boydton and white oak roads, five forks, appomattox court house. Regiment lost during service 16 officers and 228 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 officer and 112 enlisted men by disease, a total of 357. The flags issued to this unit at the start of their service, were made by gilbert hubbard & co of chicago and, s. F. White & brothers also of chicago. The national flag made by hubbards follows the standard pattern adopted by the union army. It has no honours, only the regimental designation painted in gold. This flag would see service until june 1863. The regimental flag made by s.F. White carries not the state seal of wisconsin but the national arms the unit designation appears on a golden scroll beneath the national arms. As with the national flag it would be replaced in june 1863.The originals are housed in the wisconsin veterans museum, madison, wisconsin.
