Organized at philadelphia june 11 to september 4, 1862. Left state for washington, d.C., august 31, thence moved to rockville, maryland. September 7. Moved to fairfax court house, on september 21 and, duty there till october 6. Moved to harper’s ferry, west virginia., october 61862 attached to 2nd brigade, (irish brigade) 1st division, 2nd army corps, army of the potomac, to june, 1864. 4th brigade, 1st division, 2nd army corps, to july, 1865.Battles: duty at harper’s ferry till october 29. Advance up loudoun valley and movement to falmouth, fredericksburg, burnside’s 2nd campaign, mud march. At falmouth till april, chancellorsviile campaign april 27-may 6, chancellorsviile, gettysburg (pa.) campaign june 11-july 24, gettysburg, pursuit of lee july 5-24, advance from rappahannock to the rapidan september 13-17, bristoe campaign october 9-22, auburn and bristoe october 14. Advance to line of the rappahannock november 7-8. Mine run campaign november 26-december 2. Demonstration on the rapidan february 6-7, 1864. Duty at stevensburg till may. Regiment lost during service 8 officers and 137 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 officer and 88 enlisted men by disease a total loss of 234 men. The flags of this regiment follow examples of pennsylvania units to the letter. Although made up of many irish american recruits the unit was to retain its state identity. . The original flags of the 116th infantry regiment are held in the civil war flag collection at the state museum in harrisburg, pennsylvania. This museum has loaned a flag marker to the irish national museum, in dublin, which bears the unit designation and 5th regiment irish brigade, fielded on a red and white guidon similar to that of an artillery battery.Room 630 main capitol building
