Description
By the advent of the civil war the national flag (stars & stripes) had become familiar to all americans. It was made up of a blue canton with thirty four stars in rows of five and, two rows of three stars. The field of the flag was made with seven red stripes and, six white stripes. Unit designation appeared on the fourth red stripe in gold stencil. This type of flag would remain in use for all union troops throughout the war.
