Organized as company 13, tennessee artillery corps july 18th 1861 at bowling green, kentucky. Battery surrendered t fort donelson in february 1862. Exchanged at vicksburg the unit was reorganized as morton’s battery with captain john morton in command on december 27, 1862, during general nathan bedford forrest’s first west tennessee raid. The battery began with two captured 3″ steel rifled rodmans, and two borrowed guns from freeman’s battery. Morton’s battery received it’s baptism under fire at the battle of parker’s crossroads, tennessee on december 31, 1862 and, was to see much action as part of forrests cavalry corps.Battles: fort donelson, florence, chigamauga, chattanooga, okolona, brices crossroads, tupelo, forrests memphis raid, forrests west tennessee raid 1864, athens, fort heiman, johnsonville, franklin nashville campaign, owens crossroads, stockade #2, wilsons raid.Department of alabama mississippi & east louisiana type battleflag, with large central star and, the letters, m & b in white paint on either side of central star. The original flag was concealed at the units surrender and, remains in private hands.
